I did defrag a few weeks back. My computer is over five years old and it had never been done. About seventy five percent of the hard drive is filled. I uninstalled a bunch of programs I don't use as a preparation. But man did I have trepidations, you can screw something up doing this so I made sure to set a new restore point. So I go to do it and it says it doesn't need to be done. A friend says it's probably because I haven't downloaded tons of programs and then uninstalled them.
As I understand the purpose of defrag is to re-order the information. I wouldn't do it to the external. It's all Dead shows? The way everybody worries about external failures I wouldn't touch it.
